2010 All Chapter Side-by-Side Championship, Gathering and Fun Shoot - Report

Like the title suggests, this state wide event had something to offer for everyone. The very serious side-by-side shooter could compete for the various championship trophies. We all enjoy the gathering part of the event, or we could call it the social side. There was lots of camaraderie with fellow side-by-side gun enthusiast. Many more members enjoyed the fun shooting. They enjoy shooting the side-by-side shotguns, but don't take it too seriously. This was the second year for this all chapter gathering on Memorial Day weekend. It was 20% larger then last years event even with the difficulty in finding available hotel rooms. Next year we have a plan that will solve this problem.

This year a large open tent was erected next to the club house to accommodate our white table cloth catered dining. The club house was completely full of display tables. Friday morning at 10:00am a meeting was called to order by Event Chairman, Larry Shelton. He went over some changes in rules and some new rules. Jerry Mele, the Sporting Clays coordinator, gave instructions about the small gauge and all gauge sporting clays course. Tom Cacek had the rifle course all setup and ready for shooting, Tom gave an explanation of the scoring. Larry Ruppert was in charge of the trap shooting, he explained a new form and procedure he had for scoring these events.

After dinner Friday and Saturday, our President Jerry Kitto addressed the members, accessed the State of the Gathering and the Side-by-Side Society. He also thanked those that helped with this event,  also thanking our hosts Richard and Kim Iverson who own Sun Mountain Gun Club. They are friendly, accommodating, gracious and meticulously maintain their club. We had a variety of door prizes each night, 25 prizes from cases of shot shells to shooting glasses.

Shooting began at 10:00am Friday and continued until 5:00pm Saturday. During this period you could shoot for championship score anytime you wanted. All ties were shot off early Sunday morning.

Winners of RIFLE event were:
1st place, and Side-by-Side Rifle Champion of 2010 - Bob Anderson with a score of 259, won the engraved silver Chalice.
2nd place Phil Fayne with 215 won a $100.00 gift card, using a Purdy 450-400.
3rd place Steve Helsley 195, a $50.00 gift card, using a William Powell, back action hammer, lifter circa 1869.

SPORTING CLAYS Champion 2010, all gauges, Rob Shelton, 81 out of 100, using a W. & C. Scott. Won the engraved silver chalice. He was the only shooter to run the last station, a high duck tower.
B class, Doug Curran, $100.00 gift card, using a L. C. Smith.
C class, Harry Kauffman, $50.00 gift card, using a 35 year old Miguel Larranaga, side lock.

HIGH OVER ALL SHOTGUN CHAMPION 2010, the highest total score of the: Trap, Wobble Trap, Doubles Trap and 100 Sporting Clays. John Sands, with 150 out of a possible 180, using a Winchester M21, won the H.O.A. engraved silver chalice.
B class, Jerry Mele, $100.00 gift card, using a L. C. Smith.
C class, Richard Edlund, $50.00 gift card, using a Cashmore and Purdey.

In addition to above Side-by-Side events, this year we had a couple of additional shotgun contests. We were honored to have the L. C. Smith Collector's Association join us. They provided a beautiful crystal trophy for the highest score using a L. C. Smith shotgun. The winner was Robert Szerwo with a score of 136 of 180.

A second special contest was a Single Shot vintage trap shoot. We have found that many of our side-by-side members also collect and shoot the old vintage single shot trap guns. These guns operate on the same principles as the side-by-side, a top lever, drop down barrel and are of equal quality. The only difference is the single barrel. Well, I guess we felt sorry for these neglected old work horses of the past and decided to give them a place to shine. I'm sure I saw a smiling face on Frank Baratti's old Parker single barrel trap gun when it and Frank won the 25 bird event, shooting from 25 yards, they had a score of 22. Frank received the 2010 single barrel trap champion chalice.

B class, was won by Cliff Wagner, a $100.00 gift card.

C class, Gary Sayre, a $50.00 gift card.

Besides all of the shooting, the displays were wonderful. There were 25+ tables full of fine Side-by-Sides on display. We thank everyone that brought a display.
BEST DISPLAY, peoples choice, 1st place to Richard Edlund for his outstanding English collection, won the engraved silver chalice.
2nd place to Herb Hyatt for his magnificent English collection, a $50.00 gift card.
3rd place to Rob Shelton for his excellent display of W. & C. Scott, hammer guns, a $50.00 gift card.

The L. C. Smith Collector's Association gave a crystal trophy for the best L. C. Smith shotgun on display. Won by Jerry Mele with a 12 gauge Specialty grade, manufactured in 1929. This gun began his “affair with Elsie”.

Besides Jerry Kitto our President, his wife Glenda and myself, there were other members that helped make this event a success. At the top of this list to thank are two members that probably had the hardest jobs.
Tom Cacek was in charge of the rifle matches, he set up the moving targets on tracks that he designed and manufactured, plus managed the rifle shooting. Tom got there a day early to set it all up for us.
Larry Ruppert was in charge of all the trap events (4), this shooting area becomes a real hub of activity at times. Managing four different events all at the same time can get hectic. Larry made up a form this year that contributed to the efficiency in running these events. He also got their a day early.
Other members that were a great help were: Jerry Mele who managed the two Sporting Clay events. Jerry made up special Sporting Clays score sheets for the Side-by-Side Society. Jerry lives close to the facility so was called upon to check on a number of details for us. Roger Lake and Roger Stuart managed the displays tables and awards. Clark Olovson was very helpful running the trap events. Mark Effle, Cliff Wagner, Rob Shelton, Don Fullmore, Jim Webster and Phil Payne, where all a great help.

Larry Shelton, Event Chairman
